Relay for Life raises money for cancer
Lakeland College's second annual Relay for Life raised $14,660.39 last Saturday, over $2,000 more than the year previous. The registered participants also increased from over 150 last year to 187 this time around. Seventeen teams made up of students, faculty, staff, and affiliates enrolled in the relay with the standard $150 entry fee.

Lakeland College has hired Ken Strmiska as the new vice president for advancement. The VP for Advancement secures funds for the college from donors through intensive fundraisers and helps assure that Lakeland students can receive scholarships. The VP also creates personal relationships with donors.

Rising minimum wage may force college to revamp employment
On July 24, the federal minimum wage will be increasing 70 cents from $6.55 to $7.25. That means most workers who occupy the lower end of the income spectrum, such as Lakeland students, will receive a raise this summer, and those raises may require some businesses to lay off workers, a situation that Lakeland hopes to avoid.

VITA tax refunds bring in over $1.2 million

Now that tax season has come to a close, this year's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) has begun to wind down. From late January through April 14, accounting students from Lakeland and Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) filled out 770 tax returns under the guidance of Richard Gaumer, associate professor of accounting.
