On Wednesday, April 17, Lakeland’s maintenance crew found a suspicious tube near the alumni pavilion near the football field and feared it to be a pipe bomb. It turned out to be a non-threat, only after giving officials from Milwaukee, Sheboygan, and Franklin quite a scare.

The tube was found just before 8:30 in the morning. After discovering the item, a member of the maintenance crew contacted the Sheboygan sheriff’s department, who arrived within 20 minutes and held ground for a bomb squad unit from Milwaukee.

The bomb squad decided to detonate the tube using heavy sandbags and special explosives. A bang similar to that of a gunshot echoed through the air, and officials discovered that the tube wasn’t full of gunpowder, but pennies.

Members of the bomb squad as well as the Sheboygan County Police Department did not wish to comment any further on the situation, but according to David Gallianetti, director of communications at Lakeland, extra precaution was taken as the result of a similar case in Random Lake a few weeks ago. Gallianetti said he had reason to believe the tube of change had something to do with a pledge project executed by the Mu Lambda Sigma fraternity a few weeks ago.

Upon departure from the scene a Sheboygan County official got his car tire stuck in the mud. He made no comment, but his partner said, “That’s what you get when you let the new guy drive.” Lakeland’s maintenance department was called to the scene and two members pulled the car out with a pick-up truck.
