Lakeland College has hired eight new residence assistants and eight previous RAs are returning. There were 19 new applicants interviewed for the then six vacant positions.
The college's residence life staff and the dean of students interviewed students who aspired to become residence assistants throughout the month of February.
According to Mike Huser, residence hall director, the competition was very tough because all the applicants were quite ready for the interviews. "The interviewees proved that the career development and student employment offices did a great job preparing the applicants for the interviews." Huser commended Chelsey Cegielski, manager of student employment, and Lisa Lindsay, director of career development.
The RA position requires someone who acquainted with what is going on around the campus. An RA should be someone who has spent at least a year on campus, according to Huser. "We need students who have a campus experience of at least a year of stay," he said. The RA openings are not officially for freshmen.
Grosshuesch Hall has the following new RAs: Ryan Barnes, Rodney Carter, Travis Whitcomb, and Tim Vallier. Muehlmeier Hall has returnees Tim Romanello, Adam Sherwood, Sarah Wall, and a newcomer Danny Jansson. Krueger Hall's returnee is Jodie Liedke while the new RAs are Bonnie Field, Brooke Jensen, and Lena Yurs. Nick Hovde, Luke Pfeifer, and Danielle Turney will return as RAs for the apartments. The Friedli Hofer Suites will be under charge of the only international student RA, Girts Rubenis, who's also a returning RA.
The interviews were conducted in a three-step process. In the first step all the aspiring representatives were interviewed as a group. The residence life directors and the dean of students conducted this interview with the assistance of career development and student employment offices.
The second step was a one-on-one interview conducted by Huser, Jeff Willems of Grosshuesch Hall, and Melinda Charbonneau of Krueger Hall.
last phase was a one-on-one interview conducted by Dean of Students Sandy Gibbons-Vollbrecht and the campus center staff. Thereafter, the residence directors converged to make a final decision by scrutinizing applicants regarding their excellence in the three areas of academics, trustworthy, and involvement.
Residence life has scheduled a formal five-day seminar for all residence assistants in August on dates to be announced. During this seminar, the group will focus on helping RAs improve in the three core areas of excellence in academics, trustworthy, and involvements, and feel the way through the entire service period. There are also training programs scheduled to be conducted occasionally throughout the school year.
"I believe the process will help both the hired and those not hired in future job interviews," Huser said, adding that the applicants got a very important experience.
