The Lakeland College softball team went to Simpson College in Iowa last weekend and came back with a 1-3 record. The Muskies' bats were quiet in the first three games as they scored only three runs. The bats came alive in the finale as the Muskies posted a 6-3 victory over Viterbo.

Michelle Hammers posted her first career win on the mound in that game as the Muskies improved to 5-10 on the young season. Hammers also had six strikeouts. Sara Buechel went 2-3 at the plate in the win, while Darcie Okimosh was 3-4 to lead the way for the Muskies.

"It was good to see the team rebound and win the last one," Muskies head coach Jill Staff said. "We could have quit after the third game, but we came back and played hard and earned the win."

The Muskies lost to Monmouth in the opener, 7-1. Kelly Schmidt took the loss in that one. Next up for the Muskies was Simpson. The Muskies stumbled out of the gate and lost 11-1. Buechel and Hammers were each standouts at the plate as each of them went 2-2. Hammers, however, was tagged with the loss. Things did not get any easier for Lakeland as they played NCAA Tournament Qualifier Wartburg next. The Muskies played them tough, but lost 5-1. Stephanie Ihnat led the hitters as she went 2-3.

Buechel was the leading hitter on the weekend going 5-10.

"The scores were not indicative of how we played," Staff said. "We had untimely errors that lead to a lot of runs, but for the most part we were in every game."

"We played good in parts of all three of the losses, and we really put it together against Viterbo. If we can continue to put it together, we will be a good team, and hopefully we can ride the momentum of this game into Saturday's game against Edgewood," Staff said.

As mentioned, the Muskies return home for their conference opener against pre-season favorite Edgewood. That double header will begin at 1 p.m.
