The end of another successful year for Global Student Association is approaching fast, and even though the semester has flown by in a flash, many great things were accomplished by international students throughout the school-year that are worth the reminisce.
During October 2002 GSA hosted an International Food Festival during the Homecoming activities. The Lakeland College community got to enjoy cuisines from all over the world served at the Campus Center Lounge. Countries like Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Ukraine, America, Germany, Malawi, China, and Estonia were represented by Lakeland's own outstanding student chefs.
In November 2002 a traditional Door County Fish Boil was presented to raise funds for an educational trip during spring 2003 semester to Chicago. Many participated to experience the dinner that included boiled whitefish, potatoes, onions, coleslaw, rye-bread, a piece of cherry pie and beverage.
During December 2002 GSA celebrated Christmas at the Chinese New Buffet in Sheboygan that was followed by the Chinese New Year Celebration in January in the same restaurant. Over 70 international students and a few faculty and staff joined the festivity where besides great food, the Chinese and Taiwanese students introduced their customs and traditions to their friends from all around the globe.
During the year, GSA members also helped with the Tsubame project, and gave numerous talks to schools, club, organizations and churches in the area about their countries.
During the month of January, GSA began a Cultural Connection Program choosing one country per month to be introduced to the community. Spring semester included a presentation on Malawi as well as on Japan. The same program will be continued next school year to familiarize the community with diverse cultures.
Throughout the 2002-2003 school-year, GSA offered articles in "The Mirror" about activities involving international students on campus encouraging everyone's participation. To further promote cultural awareness, in each issue of "The Mirror," the organization offered facts about countries represented on Lakeland's campus, along with comments from students from corresponding countries.
In April, GSA held another fundraiser, International Food Sale, which turned out to be more popular than expected with more than 80 dishes sold from Russia, Malawi, Japan and Dominican Republic. GSA will end its year with a trip to Chicago on April 26 to offer members an opportunity to visit Shedd Aquarium, have lunch at Navy Pier, and also see the Museum of Science and Industry.
GSA would like to thank everyone who supported or participated in the events that the organization offered, and the members are looking forward to the next great season of cultural sharing.
