Recently, Student Association raised $1,300 to purchase an AED machine for the Campus Center. The machine is a type of defibrillator that can restore the heartbeat of a victim of heart attack or heart failure, and this is the first time Lakeland College has had one.

To raise the lofty $1,300 for the machine, SA drew donations from various resources including a bowling tournament, the business office, housekeeping and maintenance, campus Greek organizations, and IGC.

"Bowling really raised the most money," over $500, said Gibbons-Vollbrecht, dean of student life. Also, members of the Business Office contributed quite a bit of time to the fundraising process, including Norene Bauer, business office manager, and Jackie Flesch, business office assistant.

SA members became interested in the AED machine when they learned through Red Cross training that the machines were becoming more popular. "Given that Lakeland is remotely located, we thought it would be a valuable to have in case something were to ever happen," said SA President Luke Pfeifer.

After the idea was approved to purchase one AED machine through fundraising, members of SA thought it would be valuable to have a second one on campus. "[After] we decided to fundraise to purchase the first one, we reached an agreement in which the cost of a second is being matched by Dr. [Stephen] Gould," added Pfeifer. One machine would be kept in the Campus Center and the other in the Wehr Center.

SA is also looking to acquire cages to put the machines in to protect them from damage. "We would like to purchase something to put them in where an alarm will go off if the cage is opened," said Pfeifer. Such a system could prevent vandalism and alert others to a potential problem should the occasion to use the machine arise.
