Harry is back for his fifth year of school, but everything in his life is about to turn upside down. It all starts when he has to defend his large bully of a cousin Dudley (whom he hates) from a dementor, a gruesome hooded creature with "gray, slimy, scabbed hands" and "putrid, death-cold breath." Harry conjures a silver stag to defend them. Harry's strange neighbor lady Mrs. Figg (an old lady with a cat obsession) shows up and Harry discovers from her that he is being watched by his head master the wizard Dumbledore for his own protection, so things like the dementor can't come after him, but a wizard named Mundungus who was watching him wasn't where he was supposed to be, so the dementors appeared.

Harry must go to trial for using magic outside his school, Hogwarts to get rid of the dementors. Dumbledore sends for him and takes him into the safe keeping of "the Order of the Phoenix," a group of good wizards and witches who fight against Voldemort's (a type of wizard Hitler who wants to kill all non-witches and non-wizards) evil plans. Harry stays with the order until school starts.

The Ministry of Magic, which must try Harry for using magic outside of school, is becoming corrupt. The Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, is jealous of Dumbledore and doesn't believe his claim that Voldemort is coming back to power. Fudge begins to unfairly control the education at Hogwarts by appointing a member of the Ministry of Magic (Dolores Umbridge) as a teacher. Umbridge is a power hungry woman that looks like a "large, pale toad" with "large, round, and slightly bulging [eyes]." Umbridge manages to get Fudge to depose Dumbledore as the head master at Hogwarts. She eagerly takes over the position and begins to fire the other teachers as she sees fit.

Will Dumbledore ever return as headmaster? How corrupt will the Ministry of Magic become? Find out more by reading "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" by J.K. Rowling. It's a whimsical Halloween read that will have you laughing at its kooky characters and biting your nails at the suspense in each chapter.
