It is getting to be that time of year when the summer blockbuster movies are over and studios begin to release their Oscar movies. The upcoming months are shaping up to be a monumental time in movie making. There are the obvious choices - The Matrix Revolutions and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and the not so obvious choices - The Last Samurai and Paycheck. Either way, there are exciting movies coming up.
First off is Scary Movie 3. It releases October 24th and centers on Cindy whose close friend dies because of a mysterious video tape and along the way she meets Orpheus who tells her she is "The One" who must help the President of the United States prevent an alien invasion. (Hmm, the description alone spoofs three movies.) It will be different than the first two because it does not include a Wayans. (Thank God!) The cast does include big name actors however: Charlie Sheen, Pamela Anderson, George Carlin, Eddie Griffin and some of today's biggest musical names such as: Redman, Method Man, Macy Gray, and Ja Rule.
Also this fall, two movies starring big time actors are due for release. Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Meyers, and The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise, will entertain audiences. The Cat in the Hat is based on the book, but I never read it (I'm not quite to that reading level yet) so I cannot give many details. It will be released on November 21st. Samurai is a sweeping picture centering on an American Civil War veteran (Cruise) who travels to Japan to teach the Emperor's army how to kill the remaining Samurai. Theaters will see this epic on December 5th.
Timeline and Paycheck, two movies I am looking forward to this fall, are flying below the radar. Timeline is a movie about a son and his classmates who travel back to the Middle Ages to find his father. It stars Paul Walker (The Fast and the Furious) in his first starring role. Paycheck stars Ben Affleck, who realizes his mind has been tampered with as he tries to collect his paycheck. Like in real life, it will never come soon enough. It is based on a story written by Philip K. Dick, whose other stories, Blade Runner, Minority Report, and Total Recall, have made great movies.
