It's the fall of 2003, and yet another school year is upon us. To help keep the Lakeland community informed of the events taking place through Student Government, I have decided to begin a column in the Mirror. I ask that you read through this article in each edition and send me your feedback. Understand that your feedback is extremely important and that you can make a difference at Lakeland.
Student Government is in full swing, and at the time of publication of this article the new cabinet positions will be announced. Look for the posting on the Student Organization Center Door in the Campus Center. Our first meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 1 at 6:30pm in Laun 210. Everyone is invited to all of our meetings.
There are a number of changes that are in store for the students of Lakeland. The first of these changes that I want to partially discuss is that of a change from a 4-credit system to a 3-credit system. Beginning in the fall of 2004 this system will be changed to a system with most classes are 3-credits. Classes will be shortened, but each student will take 5 classes a semester for full load versus 4 currently. Student Association will strive to keep the students informed on how this will affect them during their time at Lakeland.
This year we welcome some new residence life staff members, admissions staff, academic staff, and athletic staff. Our new Director of Residence Life is in the process of setting up a hall government that will allow the residents of Lakeland to work on their programming and help Student Association ensure the voices of the resident population are being heard. For more information on hall government contact your Hall Director or the Director of Residence Life, Jim Bajczyk.
Starting soon you will see a weekly student crier and listing of events. In response to a survey performed in the spring we have worked all summer to help increase communication between the entire Lakeland College community, and we feel this weekly publication and this article you are reading will be a huge kick-off.
With that being said there are always issues that stand up in the minds of students. Please tell us about them; we value your input completely. E-mail any SA member, come to an SA meeting, or leave a voicemail to setup a meeting with us by calling x-1210. As I will do in the weeks to come, I will conclude this article with a few questions I pose in order to receive the opinions of the students. Please email me your thoughts at pfeiferl@lakeland.edu or send them to Box 3017.
1) Do you feel smoking should be allowed in the residence hall facilities?
2) Do you think the overnight guests rule needs to be re-studied and reviewed?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on these questions. The next edition of the Mirror will contact the results along with information from our upcoming Student Government meetings. I hope to see you all at your first meeting!
