The women's soccer team returned to pre-season camp this year, looking to continue the accomplishments of their phenomenal 2002 season. A 15-4-1 team last year, the ladies will try to beat the opposition without graduated defender Jasmine Bastasic and 3-time LMC Player of the Year Stefany Nutter.
Lakeland is lucky to have returning scoring machines senior, Meghan Wudtke (30 goals and 9 assists last year) and junior, Amanda Smith (22 goals and 7 assists). "Meghan and Amanda provide us with two very dangerous players up top that requires the other team's attention. If our opponent decides to concentrate on one of them, it opens it up for the other to score," says head coach Marc Colwell.
The defense will be anchored by sophomore, 2002 LMC All-Conference Briana Plautz. She will be the centerpiece of a defense that allowed only 17 goals the entire season last year. She will be teaming with returning senior work-horse, Michelle Schleh and freshman, Allyce Maus. Retaining her position in the net, Lindsay Olm will look to top her performance from last year, recording 62 saves and eight shutouts.
Lakeland is also strong at midfield, boasting senior, Amy Hertzfeldt (15 goals and eight assists) and sophomore standout, Nicki Smith (six goals and 10 assists). First to test the Muskies was Rockford. They handled them easily, winning 3-1, while out shooting them 34-4. Freshman midfielder, Tracy Bins made an instant impact as she was named LMC Player of the Week with her efforts in the season's opening.
Unfortunately, the Muskies would battle hard twice in two double-overtime thrillers against visiting, North Park and Aurora Colleges, but end up on the down side of both games losing 4-3 and 2-1.
A trip to Oregon was next on the schedule for the Muskies, where they would square up against power-houses, Linfield and Willamette-both nationally ranked. But again they suffered unfamiliar results, losing 6-1 and 9-0. Amanda Smith's goal in Friday's contest against Linfield was their lone-goal scorer on the trip.
"We have a few areas to work out in practice," says Loppacher, "the girls will bounce back; they always have."
