After ushering in an unprecedented 35-5 overall record and 12-0 in conference, the Muskies definitely knew what it took to win; however, they lost a few key players to graduation. In addition, they are playing one of the most difficult schedules in the nation; they are bound to face some obstacles in this season.
"Last season was so successful and so rewarding it will be hard to top," said Coach Chad Schreiber. "On a day-to-day basis early on we won't be as good as last year. But we expect to be better in the long run if we stay healthy and maintain a positive attitude.
"Replacing four starters and having a tougher schedule might mean some losses during the regular season, but should pay dividends at the end of the season," said Schreiber, who is entering his ninth year with the squad.
Playing without the experience of last year's team, the Muskies will have to rely more on the depth of the team to overcome tough teams. "We have some good returning upperclassmen who we will rely on to provide leadership to some solid newcomers," said Schreiber.
Among those returning are senior captains, Monica Draeger and Amy Lieske. "Aside from what they bring to us on the floor they add experience and leadership to our team," Schreiber said.
With a record of 3-7, some trouble facing the team early in the 2003 season has been finishing games. Lakeland has not had any trouble competing with teams but unfortunately at this point they are going through some growing pains and have not been able to finish games. A while ago, the Muskies held an invite tournament at home against Saint Norbert, Elmhurst, Aurora, and River Falls. The Muskies only won one of their matches, but they beat River Falls once who is ranked number eleven in the nation for division three volleyball.
Just a few weeks ago the Muskies traveled to Saint Paul Minnesota to Saint Thomas College for a tournament on September 12-13. The Muskies ended up not winning the tournament, but it was a time for them to find new players to fill the empty spots left open by the graduating seniors.
Two weeks ago the Muskies faced Concordia at home winning the first match by the score of 30-26, then winning 30-18 and finally pulling out the win with a close finish at 34-32. The Muskies added another impressive win Tuesday with a victory over conference foe Marian College that moved them to 2-0 in conference.
