So far this season, the Lakeland football team and new head coach Jim Zebrowski have given themselves and their fans a reason to believe that this will be a successful year. The Muskies have begun the season with a 2-1 record and, despite the loss, have plenty of confidence heading into the conference schedule.

In the first game of the season, the Muskies cruised to victory by running over and through Tri-State University to give Zebrowski a 1-0 head coaching record, gaining 291 yards on the ground. Nick Hunter led the way for the Muskies ground game, rushing for 129 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback, Brent Luebke helped the Muskies cause by completing 10 of 20 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

For the second game of the year, Lakeland traveled to Kenosha where Carthage was ready to avenge last season's last second loss to the Muskies here at Taylor Field. For the first nine minutes, it seemed as if Carthage was up to the task by jumping out of the gate for a quick 10-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Redmen, their lead wouldn't last long. The Muskies stormed back, led by Luebke, who capped off the drive with a 17 yard scramble to make it 10-7. Not too long after, Lakeland was given great field position and tied the game with Matt Cook's 29 yard field goal. The Muskies weren't done yet, scoring early in the second quarter on another Luebke run, thanks to more excellent field position set up by Ryan Van De Loo's interception.

The 7-point lead, despite a little late drama, would be all the Muskies would need. Carthage would eventually miss an extra point to seal a 17-16 victory for Lakeland, who improved to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 1998.

Next on the schedule were the imposing Titans of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Coming into the game as underdogs, the Muskies made this one a game for the ages, losing a four overtime heartbreaker, 26-23.

Oshkosh struck first from quarterback Nick Wara's 21 yard scamper and ended up being the only score for the first half. Both defenses stood up to each other's explosive offenses well until Luebke completed a 24 yard strike to Shaun Behrend to tie the game on the opening drive of the second half.
