On Wednesday, October 15, a goose in the pond near President Gould's house died from a blow to the neck from a Frisbee disc.
The disc, thrown by Dave Schneider, struck the goose right in its neck. Schneider slipped as he threw and the disc launched into a pack of geese that were swimming in the pond. All of the other geese, immediately sensing danger, moved out of the pond and watched their companion flail around for about a minute before the goose stopped moving.
When the goose was hit, its head dropped below the water and it thrashed its wings, but its head never returned to the surface.
It is speculated that the goose's death came from the strike to its neck or drowning afterwards because it couldn't lift its head above the water.
Dave Schneider was playing a game of disc golf with a friend on Lakeland's newly constructed course. He was teeing off on the 8th hole, which is the hole that requires the player to throw his or her disc over the pond when his disc struck the goose.
"I couldn't believe I hit the goose," Schneider replied. "We walked over to try to help the goose, but it just floated further to the middle and died."
Similar sports incidents have happened. In March of 2001, a bird flew into the path of a pitch during a baseball game and was killed instantly.
