As the weather changes from the dog days of August to the chilled effects of a Lakeland College November wind, one thing remains constant-- the women's team sits a top the Lake Michigan Conference and awaits their opponent for the second round of the LMC tournament.
Last year a championship in both the regular season and the tournament ended in an unfortunate no-show in the NCAA tournament. However, with solid victories over rival Edgewood in a 2-1 Senior Day showdown and a shutout of Marian, 4-0, the Lady Muskies set themselves up for a great chance to repeat. They clinched a first round bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
In their 2-1 victory, it was fitting to have senior Amy Freier seal the Senior Day game off of an assist from Amanda Smith, who scored the first goal of the afternoon. In the match-up against Marian, Smith scored two goals and added an assist. Briana Plautz and Amy Herzfeldt added the other two goals.
Sitting at 9-10 overall, Wednesday's game versus Wisconsin Lutheran means that the Muskies could reach .500 and move one step closer to their dreams of last season. Earlier in the season, Lakeland (5-1-0) dropped their only conference loss to Wisconsin Lutheran. However, they were without Amanda Smith. Smith looks to lead them to victory Wednesday, with her super-heroine scoring ability. She has connected on 25 goals and has assisted her teammates on 10 others. Her season numbers put her second in the nation for Division III in points per game.
Others looking to carry Lakeland to the tournament championship are defender Briana Plautz, center-midfielder Amy Herzfeldt and Lakeland's other goal-scoring-machine, Meghan Wudtke.
With a victory on Wednesday, Lakeland will host the championship here on campus the following Saturday.
