Lakeland's women's volleyball team faced tough competition at the UW-Whitewater tournament on October 24-25. They competed against three of the top teams in the nation for Division III volleyball: UW-River Falls seeded 7th, Central College (IA) ranked 10th, and UW-Whitewater ranked 11th. They also had a competitive match against former NCAA Tournament rival, St. Norbert College, who is standing first in the north MWC conference.
The Lady Muskies lost both matches Friday night against St. Norbert (25-30, 21-30, 29-31) and UW-River Falls (30-28, 26-30, 26-30, 20-30). Monica Draeger, hitting .300, led the team in kills with 12 against St. Norbert and had only three errors out of 30 attempts. Melissa Braaksma and Heather Heberlein followed closely behind in leading number of kills, with 11 apiece, and the match resulted with 45 assists by Lana Neuman. Resi Ertler carried the Muskies in digs for both matches with 18 against St. Norbert and 22 against River Falls.
Saturday's competition didn't bring much reward to the team, either. The matches against 2002 NCAA Division III champions UW-Whitewater and against Central both resulted in tough losses for the team. Leading players for kills were Ertler with 10 point-winning hits against Whitewater and Draeger with 13 against Central. Sarah Buechel carried the team both matches with the most defensive digs.
Danielle Duranceau had a high hitting percentage of .667 during the first two games against Central. She contributed six kills out of nine attempts with no errors before ending her season with a torn ACL.
"This weekend sapped our confidence," commented head coach Chad Schreiber. "We still plan to schedule tournaments like this one. These are teams that we eventually want to be."
Lakeland still held the top spot in the LMC conference after a 3-0 win last Tuesday night against Wisconsin Lutheran (30-20, 30-28, 30-19). High performers in defensive digs were Ertler with 15 and Amy Lieske and Jennifer Kwilosz, both with 10. Braaksma hit .368 against the Warriors with 8 kills and only one error out of 19 attempts. Draeger also made only one error out of her 30 attempts and carried the team with 13 kills.
