The Lakeland Muskies wrestling team is coming off a rather disappointing end to the season in which the host Muskies finished fourth of four teams at the Lake Michigan Conference Championships. Even so, the young wrestlers on the team come into the season show a lot of potential.

Led by sophomore Tim Vallier, who set the school record for pins in one season as a freshman last year, the Muskies could be dangerous in the conference this season. "Even though the team doesn't have any upperclassmen, the guys I got are really good," head coach Peter Rogers said about the team. "The future of this team is very promising."

Vallier and fellow sophomore team leaders Matt Preimesberger and Lee Sparks will show the way for the team made of all freshman and sophomores. "With all of the incoming freshman, we will finally be able to fill all of the weight classes for the first time since I've been here," Rogers added. Rogers is entering his third season as coach and has done a great job so far rebuilding the team.

The season started for the Muskies on November 1 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the first annual Dan Gable "Commitment to Excellence" Open. The tournament joins Division I, II, and III schools in one of the biggest and most competitive tournaments in the country.

Over winter break, the Muskies will travel to New Jersey for the first time ever for a Christmas tournament at the College of New Jersey. "We're lucky to be able to get a wider variety of competition. We've seen what we're able to do against the Midwest, now we want to see what we can do against the East Coast," Rogers said about the trip.

"I'm really looking forward to the season," Rogers added. "We've got a really good group of guys here, and I'm hoping that all of them can step up." With the group of guys the Muskies have, this season and the upcoming seasons could prove to be quite successful.
