On October 28, 2003, Lakeland College President Stephen Gould approved the official advancement of a new espresso bar that will be built in the campus center. Construction began on Thursday, November 6, with the grand opening set for January 13, 2004. The espresso bar will be located at the back of the campus center near the fireplace.

Mochas, lattes, blended drinks, and smoothies will be the main fare. The bar will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. These hours are tentative and may change based on the needs of students and staff. There has been talk about the possibility of using the Muskie cards in the espresso bar as a substitute meal swipe for breakfast, which would mean that students can grab a piece of fruit along with their coffee.

The coffee company that will be supplying Lakeland is called Crimson Cup Coffee Company, which is located in Ohio. Their trademark slogan is "Coffee for Independent Thinkers." They will be providing Lakeland with all the equipment as well as the drinks.

In March of 2003, Lakeland started looking around at local coffee houses as well as different suppliers for the coffee. But according to Foodservice Director Dale Carlson, "We simply went with this company because they came through with the best package."

According to Carlson, there was no question of the espresso bar ever happening, so it was simply a matter of when the right time and adequate space would manifest itself.

"It was always in the back of our minds," he said. The idea has been brewing for at least three years, and it kept resurfacing at the foodservice advisory board meetings, which are held two to three times a semester. (The foodservice board is made up of Lakeland students and staff that wish to contribute ideas to the foodservice.)

Last year previous Director of Student Life Activities Jamie Page Stadler asked Carlson if he wanted to do the espresso bar, but he said no. The cost for such an endeavor would have been approximately $2,500, and the justification for the expense was not met. A compromise resulted in a self-serve cappuccino machine by the fireplace, which has since been removed.

The new budget was planned conservatively. "I can see this project building according to the campus center 2012 project, as far as growth is concerned on campus," said Carlson. "It should be a mix of good location, as well as easy access to faculty, students, and staff," he continued.

Carlson is planning on holding a contest to name the new espresso bar. For further details see the ad on this page. Also, students are welcome to give their ideas by contacting Dale Carlson at ext. 1227.
