A rash of thefts on campus within the past month has caused campus security to consider extreme measures to ensure the safety of personal belongings and campus equipment.

Two laptop computers kept in the classrooms and a digital camera were stolen from Old Main, and a wood chipper belonging to maintenance was taken from the grounds. The computers, a Toshiba and a Winbook, valued at approximately $1600 each, were cabled to desks in separate Old Main classrooms. One of the laptops had the side damaged as it was torn form the cable, and on the other the cable had been cut. The digital camera, valued at $484.47 was taken from Academic Resource Director Paul White's office. The wood chipper, which was valued at between six and seven thousand dollars, was taken from campus grounds around the same time.

"We believe the thefts of the laptops occurred within seven days of each other," commented Carl Constable, director of campus security. "The lapse of time between when they were actually stolen and when the thefts were reported, however, narrows the chances for recovery."

White filed a report with the college as soon as he realized the digital camera was missing, and also notified Constable, his supervisor Tony Fessler, and Academic Dean Timothy Fulop.

"I believe it was stolen during the week of October 15," White remarked. "I think it is sad someone would choose to do something like that. If that person had come to me and said he or she was that hard up for money I would have figured out a way to help."

Fessler, vice president of international programs and general counsel for Lakeland, stated that since the thefts were separate incidents, insurance claims had to be filed separately as well, resulting in insurance deductibles being applied to each item.

"What this means is a huge monetary loss for the college," explained Fessler. "We received two checks for less than $300 for the laptops."

In response to the thefts, Fessler is chairing a committee to investigate options for increasing security. The committee will consist of Constable, Director of Facilities Operations Gary Bauer, Director of Information Technology Jeff Ritt, Sr., Vice President of Finance Joe Botana, Administrative Assistant and Insurance Management person Becky Boyko, and Director of Facilities Management and Planning Wayne Warnecke.
