Apathy on the campus

Paul Davis

Issue date: 11/20/03 Section: Opinions
Apathy is an epidemic in this world. It is the uncaring feeling that leads people to an uneducated life style where they treat everything on some unintelligible bias. Americans everywhere suffer from this disease, but I was hoping that college was a form of vaccine for it. As it stands, I may have been mistaken.

It seems some students read the paper and are willing to voice their opinion in their social groups, but they are unwilling to bring it forth. We on the newspaper don't have much of an idea of what you want to read because you do not often write in to inform us. After all, it is your paper, and sometimes the angles that we choose to report on may not be the ones you want to read, which is unfortunate, but it can happen.

My last article on "Cosmopolitan" magazine got a reaction, although not a written reaction. I was trying to get feedback from the crowd that does like "Cosmopolitan."

There were several comments on it being too risqué, and I do apologize for that. The group that did seem to voice this opinion the most came from faculty, though, as the students seemed to sit this article out.

Letters to the editor are a great opportunity for feedback. The letters only need to be long enough to voice your opinion. They are edited for grammar and spacing, and then we publish most of them. This will help us get to know our audience a bit better. If you have an interest in doing such, the e-mail address is lakelandmirror@yahoo.com. Otherwise drop by at Chase 216 and give us your input.

Many schools use the opinion section as a forum where the students can voice their opinions while not being expected to come to the meetings or contribute often. These are also short letters that are your opinions. If you want to do research for such letters that's great and would be appreciated, but you do not have to. I think it would be incredible if this campus became so vocal that there was a page in the paper dedicated to the voice of students and staff on this campus.
