I know that Christmas lists are not taken until St. Nick's Day, but the women's soccer team got to celebrate their Christmas wish early this year. The Lady Muskies beat the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran 3-1 in dominating fashion in the Lake Michigan Conference Championship last Saturday here at Lakeland College. Once again, super-scorer Amanda Smith led the way and sealed the game with the third goal late in the second half.

Although the Muskies have won the Lake Michigan Conference two years in a row, this was the first time the women's team would enter the NCAA tournament in school history. In the first round of the tournament, the team traveled through the Gateway Arch to square off against Washington University in a night cap game in St. Louis.

Excitement alone would prove not enough for the Muskies as Washington would outshoot the Muskies 13-0 in the first half and end up taking the game 4-0. In what might seem like a disappointing ending, the Muskies had much to celebrate: their first ever NCAA birth, an 11-11 record after starting 1-6, and a conference and tournament championship.

The Muskies had several players represent Lakeland throughout the Lake Michigan Conference Season Awards. Tracy Bins made the LMC All-Rookie Team; Allie Weiss, Amy Freier, and Nicki Smith received LMC 2nd Team honors; Amy Herzfeldt, Meghan Wudtke, Bri Plautz, and Smith received LMC 1st Team honors. Smith earned LMC Player of the Year and head coach Marc Colwell was named Coach of the Year for the Muskies.
