Having an undefeated conference record of 12-0 and sitting in first place, Lakeland was the proud host of the LMC conference tournament which was held at the Todd Wehr Center on November 7 and 8.

With a bye the first night of the tournament, the Muskies pulled off a 3-0 win Friday night against Milwaukee School of Engineering (30-22, 30-9, and 30-23) to advance to the championship game Saturday night. Both senior middle hitters had extraordinary hitting percentages and contributed 29 points together for the team with each having no errors. Monica Draeger hit .826, setting a school record, and recorded 19 kills out of 23 attempts, and Melissa Braaksma had a .625 hitting percentage with 10 kills of 16 attempts.

The team's defense held strong against the Raiders, recording seven blocks and 55 defensive digs. Resi Ertler led the team with 15 digs, Amy Lieske had 10, and Jennifer Kwilosz and Sarah Buechel followed closely behind with nine apiece. The Muskies' tough serving resulted in a total of 10 service aces to guide them along to their victory.

The Lakeland College volleyball team was named LMC champions for the third year in a row after taking three games from Marian College, with a narrow two point win in game three (30-13, 30-20, 30-28).

It was another great night of defense which helped the Muskies stop Marian from finishing long rallies. The team made 68 digs and a total of 12 blocks to stop the Sabres. High contributors of digs were again Ertler with 14, and Lieske and Buechel (both had 12). Lana Neuman had 11 digs herself and 40 assists for the night. Ertler led the team in kills with 15 followed by Draeger with 12 and Braaksma with 10.

The Muskies also earned the LMC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament held at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The team, seeded sixth, made their second appearance at the national tournament this past weekend and went up against the defending 2002 National Champion UW-Whitewater in the first round of Regionals.

Lakeland took Whitewater to the maximum five games to finish with a tough loss (31-29, 22-30, 25-30, 30-28, 14-16). After trailing 5-11 in the fifth game, the Muskies came back to battle for the win, but they ended the match with the 14-16 defeat.

Draeger, Braaksma, and Ertler all recorded doubled digits for kills: Draeger had 20, Braaksma 16, and Ertler 10. Neuman made 46 assists for the night and also led the team in digs with 18. Majority of the remaining 80 defensive digs went to Lieske who recorded 17. Ertler had 13, and Buechel had 12.

The Muskies ended their final season with an overall record of 21-16 and a 14-0 conference record.

Draeger has been selected LMC's player of the year and has been voted first team All-Conference along with Braaksma, Ertler, and Neuman. Lieske received honorable mention for the conference.
