Lakeland's men's soccer team closed their 2003 season with a loss in the Lake Michigan Conference tourney semi-finals. The team suffered the loss to Edgewood and the game came down to the wire in an intensely defensive match as both teams were scoreless through regulation and most of the first OT. The only goal in the game came from Edgewood in the 98th minute of play. Despite an excellent game by goalkeeper Joe Silverberg, throughout the game the Muskies offensive attack was dismal at best and they were unable keep up with the tough Edgewood attack.
Prior to their semi-final loss the team had defeated Marantha Baptist in a dominant match. The Muskies managed to shut out their competition while mounting an impressive offensive attack to bring the final tally to 4-0. During the game, four different Muskies joined in on the scoring, including Freshman Scott Kress who scored his seventeenth goal of the season. Others who scored were Carmel Teran, Tyler Opichka, and Adam Sherwood.
The tourney ended their season with a final record of 8-9-2 for the regular season and 3-1-2 in the Lake Michigan Conference.
The team was able to end on a few other positive notes as Kress was ranked 28th in goals per game for NCAA Division III with .94 at one point. Kress was also named the LMC player of the week for his efforts in the team's Marantha Baptist win.
The team will have plenty to look forward to next season; despite losing five seniors they will have the majority of their starters returning. Among those returning will be leading scorer Kress, and goalkeeper Silverberg.
