When people hear about a food drive, mainly they think about an organization placing a big garbage style container out in front of a business, hoping people will donate some non-perishable food. However, there is another way an organization can administer a food drive. It may seem odd or unconventional, but it has been effective for two straight years.

The entrepreneur of this new food drive system is the fraternity Mu Lambda Sigma. It all started last year at about this time. The Sigma fraternity wanted to hold a food drive, but they didn't know how to quite go about it.

An idea struck them like a bolt of lightning, as they came up with a way to host the food drive. The method called for flyers, a pick-up truck, and people's cooperation. What could these three things have in common with a food drive? In the case of the Sigmas, it comes together as a huge success.

The method is quite simple, but it is not obvious for everyone to see. The Sigma fraternity took the flyers and put them in the mailboxes of Sheboygan residents. This year they had 150 flyers that they distributed around the city.

Recipients of these flyers had two days to prepare before the Sigmas put their second part of their food drive into effect. These two days were given for the people to organize their food and see what they were willing to donate. After that, the Sigmas used the pick-up truck to collect the food, which happened on November 13, 2003.

When all the food had been collected, it was driven to the Salvation Army, which is located on Michigan Avenue. For two years in a row, the food drive has filled the back of a pick-up truck.

Due to the success of this food drive, the Sigmas are making this an annual event, and they encourage people to join in if they have a desire to help out. They want to make this bigger and better every year.
