Addition to Wehr Center up for Review
Plans for Wehr Center expansion to be brought before board of advisors

Issue date: 12/10/03 Section: Sports
Assuming the board of advisors does not shoot down the plan on the 28th of January, the Wehr Center shall be expanding east into the parking lot, starting May 2004 and going until the fall of 2005.
The addition will probably add another basketball court, a locker room for visiting teams and the varsity teams, new offices, and a state-of-the-art athletic training facility. The project will cost about six million dollars.
The new basketball court will seat about 1800 people, a larger version of its predecessor, which will not be torn down.
There will be extra locker rooms in the addition. There will be one for varsity boys, one for varsity girls, and locker rooms for visiting teams. All of this will be in close proximity of the new offices.
There will also be a new training facility that is not just for the athletes, but is also aimed at those that are not in sports so that they can stay healthy as well. The hope is to add more equipment to keep it freed up for non-athletes.
The tennis courts will be taken down and the parking lot will shrink from this extension. The courts are going to be moved to the south side of the campus by the soccer fields, while the parking lots are being evaluated right now. One idea is to move the parking south.
Concession stands will also be put up in the new facility and there is the chance of air conditioning, but with the high price of air conditioning, it is very possible that it will be omitted.
The contractor for the building is Brailsford and Dunlavey from Washington DC. The contractor has a good track record and that was the reason they were chosen for the job. To get an idea of what was needed and wanted in the area, they asked around the coaches, athletes, non-athlete students, and student life.
Boldt, from Appleton, is developing the plans and will probably do the architecture and construction for it as well. They will have the estimated highest cost in mid January. Then this will be brought to the board on January 28th along with the new dorm's plan.
The process will not come into conflict with the current structure, allowing camps and sports to continue without interruption. However it will, at a point, come into conflict with the current offices as they will have to be moved.
