It's about time that the Mr. Muskie competition had a little, pardon the word choice, competition. There is now a Miss Muskie pageant. So all you guys, make way for the women. I love the idea that women get the chance to show off their talents as well. After all, there are a lot of strong females on this campus. Sure, it's a little controversial thinking of women doing some of the stuff that the men have done in previous pageants: stripping and wearing very sexy clothing. I'm sure that there was a little heat felt under the collar from some people.
There, in fact, was a little show and tell. I asked Patti Pettigrew, a contestant, what she thought about the Miss Muskie pageant. She explained to me, right off the bat, that she intended her short strip tease to mesh with Janet Jackson's song, "Lonely." She did bare some skin; in the middle of the song, she took off her shirt and revealed her bra--Victoria's Secret brand. That fact was given incase anyone wants to know. Why not flaunt it? In her defense, she said that it's ok for the guys to strip, tease, and show off-- so why can't the women? Maybe this explains the exact reason why the Miss Muskie pageant hasn't taken place up until now. How many times have you heard people get down on women who dress sexy?
It would be a perfect world, or at least a little more perfect, if women were given the same respect as men. Well, there will be another chance for anyone who didn't catch the Miss Muskie this year. According to Juderson Desile, Secretary for the Beta Fraternity, "The main reason we did this was to have the ladies be given a chance to represent themselves. It was the first time this was done, and we hope to have a better showcase next year."
It is pretty interesting that the men in the Beta Fraternity supported this idea. Are the men showing us that they respect us more than we thought? I think so. Even if there is a little controversy, a little heat, it's better, in my opinion, to jump right into that hot water. I think the women took the jump, and willingly, with the support of the very respectable men from the Beta Fraternity, who supported this change. Congratulations to Mercedes Ferguson, who took the crown and flowers, and also to everyone else who was involved. I think a great event took place.
