After starting their season 3-3, the Lakeland Men's Volleyball team has been taking care of business with dominant hitting and well-executed team play under the power of their veteran players, kicking off the battle for conference by winning their previous two matches by favorable margins.

The Muskies snatched their first home match, January 23, over Northland Baptist Bible College, steamrolling the Pioneers in three games: 25-9, 25-9, and 25-11.

Senior middle hitter Pat Klinkert led the way with eight kills, followed by sophomore Adam Plach with seven kills, and senior Dave Koch knocking down seven of eight kill attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Brett Blomdahl had six kills and junior setter Mark Johnston contributed with 26 assists.

"They are a young program, and we are a veteran program on top of our game," said head coach Chad Schreiber of his team's match. "If we played our opening tournament like we played [NBBC], we would have been 5-1, not 3-3," Schreiber added.

The team continued to dominate the competition by hitting 31% against UW-Whitewater, finishing with scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-19. Junior outside hitter Jon Lewicki performed well for the Muskies with 10 kills and seven digs, while Plach tallied eight kills and Johnston added 25 assists.

"We haven't given up a point run yet this year, and we keep point runs for the other team limited," Schreiber added.

Next the team battled UW-Stevens Point in a match that yielded closer scores, but familiar results with Lakeland winning in three sets, 25-18, 25-11, and 25-17, hitting 38% as a team.

Lewicki came up big again for the Muskies with 12 kills and six digs, with Klinkert and Koch adding eight kills apiece. Also, Plach added 7 kills, Junior Chris Gornik tallied five, and Johnston had 20 assists in the winning effort.

The win brought Lakeland's overall record to 6-3 and 3-0 in conference as of Friday the 30th.

The Men's JV team has also been performing well this season, going 5-1 in their first week of play. "This is the deepest team we've ever had," remarked Schreiber.

Schreiber expects his team to build off of these recent wins and build toward repeating last year's successes while improving their blocking intelligence, serving, and ability to play out a full rally.

"How well we play is completely dependent upon the focus of our team," he said. "How can we shake off last year's accomplishments and do it all over again?"

Next on the agenda for the Muskies will be Carthage tonight, with their next home match coming on Sunday the 8th against UW-Platteville.
