If you would have told someone last year that Lakeland was going to be performing a musical this year, then they would have chuckled and called you a dreamer. Fortunately, dreams can come true.
Lakeland College will put on a performance of the musical called, "It's a Grand Life for Singing," written by Mike Eberhardy. It is about a person's wild ride through the phases of life from birth to death.
There are two parts that intertwine the separate scenes that make up the person's existence. One part is "Father Time," played by Chris Tourtellott, and the other is "Mother Nature," played by Carrie Hauk. These two roles initially did not have singing scenes, but Eberhardy said that he could not pass up all the opportunities for these two characters to toot their horn.
Members of the choruses and Campus Players will be participating in the musical, by filling the other roles that act out the scenes. Eberhardy was pleased with the sound of the singers in the audition. The song that he envisioned matched exactly what the chorus gave him. The piano will be the main instrument that will accompany the performers' voices. Lisa Ellis with be the accompanist.
Auditions were held on February 9, and the first rehearsal was held on February 16. This does not imply that they have an adequate number of performers. The number of female singers is sufficient enough, but there is space for three male singers.
The Campus Players desired an easier play to jump-start their once dormant organization. This is where Eberhardy stepped in and decided to write a play for the club.
Since this musical was written this past year, it is a work in progress. Eberhardy is working with the script and changing lines that seemed right before, but now need some rewriting.
The musical will be rehearsed in its entirety in a couple of weeks to determine the length and overall scope of the play. From there, Eberhardy and his performers are going to see what improvements can be made to the musical. Some scenes might be changed, deleted, or added.
Eberhardy's musical was dedicated to his granddaughter, Sirena Jade. He gives a special thanks to Samantha Poole, Tamara Poole, Staci Abrahamson, and Crystal Iverson, who helped him select songs to put into the play.
You can see "It's a Grand Life for Singing" in late April on the 23, 24, and 25. They still do not know if the showing will be for convocation credit, but as of right now, it will not be. Even if this show is not for that needed convocation credit, it should be an amazing piece that will set the standard for future musicals at Lakeland.
