Issue date: 2/19/04 Section: News
During this May term, students will have the chance to take the Time Travel To Germany class and explore Germany by flying over and seeing historical pieces first hand.

Any student is eligible, but there are a limited number of seats open and priority will be given to students who have taken courses in German, Music, Art, and Humanities, as they will have the most to offer to the colloquium, but students not in those majors can also go if space allows.

Cost of the trip is estimated around $1400 and there is a $100 deposit required to reserve a spot. The cost includes everything except one meal a day. During May 4-12 there will be on campus language and culture seminar. Basic German is learned and students prepare their contributions to understand each period.

The course is constructed as an Arts and Humanities colloquium through time and space. The campus segment of the course will prepare the students to use basic German and to understand the cultural periods that will be visited. The course is a colloquium because in that time the students will prepare on-site presentation or explanations from the particular expertise.

During the visit of the historical periods/sites, student related to music will present an on-site demonstration of the musical style during each period, German students will describe the life and culture of the time and help with the language, artists and humanities students will explain each style or art and architecture, and history students will tell how events formed each culture.

Together, the students will work to understand how each age created a new sense of meaning and values.

"The purpose of the trip is to give us the illusion of traveling through time, to get to know the great cultural periods of our heritage from experience. We will see the castles and cathedrals, view the art, hear the music, and discuss the ideas of each time period as we pass through that age. Various students will demonstrate the music, explain the artistic styles and describe every-day life at the time," Martin Ulrich, Associate Professor of German said.
