Steve Plucinski, affectionately known to some as "Plu," comes from a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, called Mundelein. He is a pitcher-secondary position is second base-and has been playing baseball for fourteen years. In other words, he has been playing baseball for seventy percent of his life, and his family has been his biggest fans and supporters the entire time. In fact, his role model is a post office worker back home, his father.

Steve bats right and pitches right. It was in high school that Steve was specialized by his coach to pitch. And it was Coach John Weber who got Steve to attend LC.

Being a Lakeland College student, Steve is majoring in sociology with an emphasis on criminal justice. His favorite professor on campus is Dr. Alan Mock. His interests on campus are hanging out with his roommates and teammate, while another sport he enjoys is basketball. Also, one can almost guess that he hates winter, since you can't play baseball.

He is just a regular guy, but possesses a huge amount of talent. Last season he had a batting average of .267, and had an ERA of 2.55. He also tallied the astonishing mark of only allowed one earned run in the entire conference season in 2003. In fact, he even tied an NCAA record by striking out twenty-two batters in one game back on April 29, 2003 against Edgewood. Steve will try to meet that record and possibly break it this year, but he also mentioned that he has to be at the top of his game, and everything has to go right for that tough feat to be duplicated.

That record-tying effort even got him recognition in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section in early 2003. When asked about what it was like to see himself in SI, Steve responded, "It was surprising." He had found out from his father two weeks before the issue came out.

Another favorite part of Steve's baseball career here at Lakeland was during his freshmen year when the team went to the College World Series and placed fifth in the nation. According to Steve, "It was awesome."

Steve is now a draft prospect this year for Major League Baseball and, as of right now, the count is twenty-three teams that are interested in him, including the Brewers, Twins, Braves, Marlins, and Diamondbacks. Sadly, the team that he would like to have an opportunity to play for, the Chicago Cubs, has not looked at him, yet.

"If you were to die tomorrow, how would you play today?" is Plu's motto; this shows, quite obviously, that he has a great love for the game. During the summer, when there is no college baseball, Steve plays for a summer league in Duluth, Minnesota.

He also recommends that if you are going to see a game this year, the one to see would be against UW-Oshkosh, and don't worry, it is a home game.
