After kicking off their conference season at 3-0, the Lakeland Men's Volleyball team took a tough loss at the hands of the UW-Oshkosh Titans, February 3rd, in five games: 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 31-33, and 15-12. The team had to do without sophomore power-hitter Adam Plach, who is currently sidelined with a finger injury.
However, the Muskies rebounded in their next home match-up, winning both matches in a home double-header against UW-Platteville and UW-Lacrosse on February 6th.
Lakeland was in for another hard-fought contest against UW-Platteville as the match stretched to 5 games. However, the Muskies prevailed, defeating the Pioneers 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 18-25, and 15-8.
Senior outside hitter Dave Koch led the way with 15 kills and 13 digs, helping the team work through a sub-par 30% hitting average and 29 errors accumulated throughout the five games. Freshman outside hitter Matt Martin also helped significantly in picking up the slack, coming in during the second game and finishing the match with 14 kills for a 62% hitting average and 8 digs.
Junior Chris Gornik also contributed with 12 kills, while Jon Lewicki had 11 kills with seven digs, Pat Klinkert tallied nine, and setter Mark Johnston recorded a staggering 55 assists in the winning effort.
The team took their building momentum obtained during the first challenging game and turned it on UW-Lacrosse for the second portion of the double-header, readily defeating them 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 in an improved team effort.
Again, Koch led with a team-high 12 kills and six digs and Gornik knocked down nine of eleven kill attempts for an 82% hitting average. Also, Klinkert contributed eight kills, Johnston had 32 assists with six digs, and sophomore Brett Blomdahl recorded seven kills and digs to seal the win.
With a quick recovery following the tough loss to UW-Oshkosh, the varsity team moves to 5-1 in conference and 8-4 overall, looking to lengthen their win streak with their next conference match-up at home against Marquette on February 18th.
