Marriage is a biblical union of man and wife to produce children. I do not see marriage as something that should be used by two people who cannot reproduce when they are unified. I believe that homosexuals should have civil unions, and I also believe that these civil unions should be given more rights.
With the definitions of words put aside, there is one other issue, and that is the amount of relief one gets with a civil union. There should be more benefits for a same-sex civil union, nearly that of a marriage; though, obviously anything having to do with child birth should not be included. I also don't believe that the benefits of having a child through adoption should be given. In fact, I'm completely against same-sex parents adopting at all.
Studies by sociologist Patricia Morgan from her book "Children as Trophies" have shown the down sides to same-sex marriages. Children are homosexual more often when raised by same-sex parents.
The mother is to be the caregiver to the child, and the father is generally a strong model. Both models are needed for the child to grow up properly. This is only derived from personal experience, so there are some exceptions, but generally the mother has always been there to take care for the child. The father mans stability for the child. The father is generally a hero even to younger children, male or female. In a lesbian couple they don't have the general hero to look up to in their life but two supposed caregivers.
Most of the studies done to show that same sex marriages are okay were just anecdotes from people living a good lifestyle. The other research was done in groups of a few dozen, and that is inconclusive to the reality. These studies are placed in newspapers for homosexuals; therefore, homosexuals that promote their lifestyle and actually care about advancing themselves will be applying, instead of doing a random survey group.
To show that these models do make the difference, when the government needs to take children away from a home because of abuse, it is generally not from a home with a mother and father who are married. She also points out that most of the studies done regarding same sex couples raising children have come from anecdotes instead of actual test research. About a third of pedophile and child molestation cases come from same sex couples as well.
Though I mostly agree with same-sex civil unions being about the same as marriage (only different on basis of name), they should still restrict same-sex unions from children. These unions do not allow the role models needed to be present for the child.
