Four bucks for the October Elle at the campus bookstore seemed deliciously verboten. I should have been saving my spare change for a Spanish dictionary or maybe a supply of cereal bars. But there I was, shuffling through the glossy pages, inhaling the divine excessiveness of Prada and Dior like a junkie. After a few minutes of looking at images of erect nipples piercing through a series of pastel Chloe chiffons, it all seemed a bit much. Who needs couture anyway? Lakeland's surrounding, umm, village areas offer more in the way of fashion than one would suspect. The following is a sampling:
Plymouth: Mills Fleet Farm (next to Wal-Mart on highway 57)
Women's Wear: Behold a fall shipment of novelty rain boots. I for one am going to vamp around in the black pair with the neon polka dots. Woo hoo! Perfect for wearing with a pleated denim mini skirt or cropped jeans.
Men's Wear: It's all about the Carhartt. There's something about the heavy duty-ness of the material. Or maybe it's the image of the buff young farmer sporting his Carhartt jeans with a polo shirt at a tractor show. I'm a sucker for polo shirts. But please, forget the flannel! It screams randy redneck. While you're at the Men's Mall, check out the line of Dickies workpants. In black, navy or blue-collar brown, these slacks look quite surfer-ish on slimmer physiques. I think they also have kind of a scrappy Ramones thing going on.
Manitowoc: Timeless Treasures (next to Beernstein's, downtown on 8th street)
To those in the vintage know, this shop has a near cult following.
Women's Wear: Become a regular. Check back every week if you have to. My favorite find so far has been a dramatic seventies wrap skirt with a huge print of giraffes sucking lollipops. Almost erotic. The prices range from $10 for beautiful, ornate brooches to $70 for an emerald winter coat from the 1950's with delicious 4-inch Lucite buttons.
Men's Wear: An ample supply of preppy sweaters and polyester shirts. Maybe you could pull it off with a good pair of Levis.
Cleveland: (Wisconsin, not Ohio!) Stoltenberg's Grocery Store
Unisex: Behind the actual groceries there's a stash of pristine canvas sneakers from the 1970's. Piled in boxes against the back wall, they come in men's sizes in cheery primary colors. Prices range from $8 to $25.
Sheboygan: Target (next to Home Depot)
Women's Wear: Yeah for Isaac Mizrahi! His line for the masses (meaning it's actually affordable for the average woman) features pieces like a fun zebra-print skirt, suede pants, and cute blazers. There's even some pointy boots to boot. As an added bonus, there's a Starbucks right in the store. I'll slurp my frappuccino to that.
