Lakeland College has broken previous records for the number of new incoming students. In fact, it's the sixth straight year Lakeland has achieved record enrollments
.
"Total enrollment will be a record enrollment with new students," said Nate Dehne, Director of Admissions.
The 871 full-time student total beats last years number of 835 full-time students by 36 students. The 326 new full-time students will be an increase of almost 7.59% from the 303 students in fall 2001. This will bring the total full and part-time total of 972 up from last year's record of 909. That's an increase of 6.93%. Of course this comes as no surprise to administration who planned this.
"The board of Trustees planned to increase day enrollment to 1200 by the year 2010," said Dehne.
Although this might sound like a small number, this is a small school. Common questions that people might ask are where will we put these new students, and will I be able to get a hold of my professor when I need him or her?
With 517 students living on campus, a number of students have been placed into tripled rooms. However, students can see that help is on the way. The new housing facility is scheduled to be completed by the fall 2005 school year.
"We have hired new faculty last year and this year," says Dehne.
Akira Kojina, a senior who was tripled up, says that "It came as a surprise, but they [roommates] are kind and have helped me many times."
"Having three people in a room is not ideal, but we don't think that students will mind three in a room because of the degree they're earning," says Dehne.
Since Lakeland is a small school you might wonder what the college is getting by accepting more students.
When asked about this, Dehne replied, "For us more students doesn't mean more money for faculty, it means more students getting a Lakeland education." He added that recruiters don't work on commission; they aren't pressuring new students to choose Lakeland over other schools.
"There will be things that catch us off guard but the growth will never come at the expense of the students," says Dehne.
