On Saturday, September 18, two apartments on Lakeland College's campus were robbed. The crimes were committed between the hours of 2:30 and 6:00 a.m. in apartments Morland Six and Hill Two.

While Morland Six residents Heather Salm, Jennifer Unterbrink, and Michelle Jasper slept, the crooks quietly entered their apartment through their patio screen door that was unlocked. The criminals managed to take over $1,300 worth of items from the apartment. Those items included a digital camera, 36 DVDs, cash, cases of Gatorade, bottles of hard alcohol, and packs of cigarettes.

The girls in Morland noticed that the criminals were very selective. They took their time choosing only certain DVDs and leaving others like, The Sound of Music and Walt Disney movies behind. Maybe they were picky crooks, or maybe they didn't even know the girls were in their beds asleep.

Hill Two residents also were robbed of all their DVDs while they were present, but sleeping in their apartment. Hill two resident Therese Ertler examined her apartment after hearing Morland Six had been robbed and noticed her apartment had items missing as well. As we all know though, we don't know something is missing until we need it, so the list of missing items has the potential to grow for both of apartments.

Morland residents noticed some of their items missing early Saturday morning and quickly reported them to Lakeland's security office. However, later that day they notice that the digital camera was missing along with the DVDs. Since the total cost stolen had risen to over $1,000, the Sheboygan County Police Department was called to campus Saturday night around midnight. A police report was taken and a case number was given.

An investigation is taking place on campus to find the criminals behind the robbery. There are no suspects yet, but the search has only begun. Everyone is encouraged to check their possessions because other apartments could have been robbed also.

Many residents in the apartments leave their patio doors unlocked or propped open throughout the day and even into the night so they don't have to walk around to the front of their apartments and use their key.
This crime just proves that campus is not really as safe and innocent as we think it is. Residents need to start locking their doors if they don't want to be the next victims of burglary.

If you have any information about the items stolen from either Hill Two or Morland Six, please notify Carl Constable, the Director of Campus Security at Lakeland College.

Students need to look out for each other. Lakeland is a small campus, so if you ever spot anything unusual, such as people carrying large amounts of items out of an apartment early in the morning, you should report it immediately to Campus Security or the Resident Assistant on duty. Lakeland is supposed to be a safe community; Let's lock our doors and keep our eyes peeled so we can keep it that way.
