Monday, October 4, was the beginning of Rush Week for the Greek Organizations on Lakeland campus. This fall is a landmark for Inter Greek Council (IGC) because it is the first semester that freshmen are allowed to rush with less than twelve credit hours.

IGC members submitted a proposal to the Dean of Students and the IGC advisors asking them to consider the possibility of allowing freshmen with less than twelve credits to pledge into Greek organizations. After several hours of debating, the Student Life staff agreed on passing a probationary clause that allows freshmen to pledge into fraternities or sororities during fall 2004.

For freshmen, Rush is a completely new experience; they get to meet people and possibly join one of the six different chapters at Lakeland College. Rush Week is dedicated to promoting Greek organizations and what they do for student life on campus.

Rush Week is the time when people interested in pledging into a fraternity or sorority get to know more about Greek life in general, and also about each chapter individually.

There has been an immense interest in Greek life this year, especially in the freshmen class. Most freshmen in their first semester do not have twelve credits. New members to the Greek organizations would be a great asset in contributing to the service efforts of the organizations.

To insure that the prospective members are also keeping up with their college work, a series of guidelines are to be applied during the pledging process. These measures include a High School GPA requirement of at least 2.75 and a required amount of study hall hours intended to ensure academic proficiency among the prospective members.

If this measure proves to be successful, it could be repeated in the following years, otherwise it will be discarded and the old regulations will be back in place.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about these regulations, you can contact any Greek on campus.
