At Lakeland's annual Opening Ceremony, President Stephen Gould recalled Lakeland College's Campus Compact, a series of agreements that the Lakeland community has followed for years to bring harmony to education and life. President Gould noted from the agreement, "Lakeland College is a caring community, . . .This community will engage in humane enterprises of education by helping students make a connection between what they learn and how they live."

In the last two years, Lakeland College's Eco-Friends Committee, headed by Professor Karl Kuhn, has been working hard to implement this value by bringing a recycling program to the campus.

In the next couple of weeks, it will be noticeable that something is missing from the classrooms in Old Main and Chase. The garbage cans in the classrooms of these two buildings will all be removed. New recycling containers for garbage and mixed recyclables (cans, plastic, glass) will be color coated, clearly labeled and have different tops to ensure that all can distinguish between them while they are stationed in central locations of Old Main and Chase. Students and faculty will have to follow the National Park Rule of Pack In, Pack Out, meaning everything you bring in, you will take out with you when you leave.

The Eco-Friends Committee is made up of students, faculty and staff on campus. It is their goal to educate the community on the biological and physical environment we live in. The effort to recycle is the moral responsibility of all members of Lakeland College Campus. Humans are the caretakers of the environment, making them responsible for its conservation.

The Committee requests that students, faculty and staff familiarize themselves with the location of the containers, so all can fulfill the values set by Lakeland College's Campus Compact.
