Due to the record number of students, Lakeland College is going through a new "face lift." This inevitability makes changes that faculty, staff, and students dislike about parking.

On September 13th, 2004 I met with Dr. Stephen Gould, President of Lakeland College, and he answered some questions that will hopefully clear up the arguments and frustrations in the Lakeland College community. Gould stated that there were three things that he did not like to discuss: the food, the high tuition and the parking. Gould believs that "Colleges and universities are loose associations of intergeneratoinal adults who are held together by shared grievances of parking."

How many of the students that you meet on a daily basis complain that their parking stall is on the other side of campus, or that they had to drive around for ten minutes just to find a parking stall?

Gould said that the 2004-2005 school year is going to be an unusual one. He also stated that there is a higher percentage of cars on campus due to the increase of students and faculty, and also, the construction that is going on.

The construction workers need to have a place to park their cars and a place to stage their equipment.

Gould also said that the parking lot on the northeast entrance, across from Prof Rd., is a temporary parking lot for the construction workers. The parking lot will be removed when the renovations are finished. Also, there is a new parking lot on the south side of Wehr. This parking lot accommodates over a hundred parking stalls and is open to anyone who chooses to park there.

The lot between Muehlmeier and Grosshuesch was used for special occasion, and will only be used again for graduation in May. The school year will be packed with cars and commotion.

Lakeland College is adding more additions and updates to the campus. This means more parking lots for people to park in. Or, maybe this will be an incentive for some people to drive from their dorm room to the athletic center. With the gas prices as bad as they are, why waste it? Why not save your gas? What is the point of driving from your dorm room to the campus center when it is not even two blocks away?

This also poses a problem for the deliveries to the campus center when there are cars randomly parked in the loading dock. Not to mention to the commuter students and faculty and staff.

Why must students that live on or off campus drive everywhere they go during the day? Why not park your car and WALK!

Parking is always going to be an issue no matter where you go. In the near future, Lakeland students will not be able to remember what the parking conditions used to be on campus. We must try and be understanding because soon parking will no longer be a hassle but a convenience.
