A new organization is slowly breaking ground here at Lakeland College, one that requires a lot of gold and blue! It's a spirit club!
The club was founded over this past summer to increase the level of school spirit and support at athletic events. The Spirit Club was first introduced on campus at the fall Involvement Expo by Sally Rutledge, manager of the campus crew. Sally is currently working with Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAC) to get the club off the ground.
Attendance at sporting events seemed to be in short supply in previous years. The lack of school spirit initiated the idea for a spirit club. It is a way for students to support each other socially without the time consuming commitments that other clubs on campus require.
To become a member, all you have to do is show your Lakeland spirit at five or more athletic events. Just dress-up and have some fun!
The club is going to be based on a point system. Points can be earned by attendance and the amount of spirit you show. If you come dressed-up with a crazy 70's fro and yellow pantyhose, or just a Lakeland t-shirt you can earn points. The more extreme you are the more points you can earn.
The points will earn you prizes for your spirit, such as a free t-shirt or sweatshirt. Judging of the points will be decided at the first meeting. Sign-up sheets will be posted at each event to keep track of those who attend.
The club also plans on taking road trips to Lakeland College's away games, by taking a spirit bus to the game. The Spirit Club is a great way to meet new people, show your school spirit and get free stuff!
If you have any questions about meeting times or how you can join the Spirit Club, contact Sally Rutledge at ext. 1249.
