The lady Muskies have regained their momentum just in time for conference play. After their conference win over Wisconsin Lutheran, they plastered UW-Platteville and improved their overall record to 5-6.
After losing to St. Norbert, the Muskies fought hard against Carthage. The game was close until Muskie sweeper Tracy Bins was injured and didn't return.
This opened it up for Carthage as they scored minutes later and piled on a half dozen more, which resulted in a losing affair for the Muskies 7-1. The only goal for the Lakeland was recorded by Amanda Smith with only five minutes left to play.
The losing-streak for the Muskies was extended to four games after a disappointing loss to Aurora 5-1. After fighting hard the whole game, Kelly Hopfinger (assisted by Ann Lehecka) for Lakeland put one into the net with about 20 seconds left. Aurora dominated the field as they bombarded Muskie goalkeeper Alli Weiss with 18 shots on goal, but she did save 13 potential scores.
The Muskies looked to open up their conference schedule with a win and their wishes became reality when they beat Wisconsin Lurtheran 2-1. Lakeland ruled the fields by shooting 17 times while 8 found their way towards the goal. Of those shots bound for the net, only two reached their destination and were both hammered in by Smith.
The defense was so stingy that Weiss didn't even record a save during her 90 minute stay between the posts.
UW-Platteville became the next victim of the Muskie's menacing D. Wiess, who only had to thwart 2 shots on goal due to the great defensive play. Smith was trying to shake triple teams all day, but that gave way for goals by Ann Lehecka (2), Marie Reynolds (2), and Briana Plautz (1).
Even though Smith was locked down most of the game, she still was able to tally up goal number 16 on the season. Those 16 goals lead the LMC, along with her total of 35 points.
The Muskies will celebrate Senior Day when Finlandia University visits Lakeland on October 9. The game is scheduled to start a 11:30 a.m.
