After starting the season with a disappointing 5-4 record, the Women's Volleyball team has fought to get back in stride, while continuing their undefeated streak of in conference match play.
Despite a close call versus Concordia in the Muskie's second meeting with the Falcons in a match that was pushed to five games, Lakeland prevailed and continues to sit atop the LMC with an 8-0 record.
After kicking off the first two in conference matches by defeating Concordia and Marian, the Muskies continued their conference rampage against MSOE September 21st, winning with ease 30-16, 30-25, and 30-23.
Senior Resi Ertler led the way with 18 kills and 13 digs, backed by junior Heather Heberlein with 12 kills and senior Amy Lieske who chipped in 8 kills and an impressive 17 digs. Additionally, junior setter Lana Neuman contributed 46 assists and 16 digs.
With the win streak going, the team looked to continue their winning ways at the UW-Eau Claire tournament September 24th and 25th, which ended in a 2-2 split as a result of several tough matches.
The first road block came against the host UW-Eau Claire squad that handed the Muskies their first loss of the tournament in a match that went to four games. After losing the first two games 17-30 and 24-30, the girls battled back to take the third game 30-27, but were unable to keep things rolling in the fourth game as Eau Claire rebounded to win 30-21.
Junior middle hitter Nikki Boeckh topped the scoring column with nine kills, followed by sophomore Connie Thousand, Heberlein, and Lieske who all chipped in 8 kills apiece, with Lieske also contributing 8 digs.
However, the team pulled together in the next two matches of the tournament against Luther College and Coe College. First, the Lady Muskies took care of Luther College in three games 30-25, 30-17 and 30-20, with Heberlein mashing down 17 kills for a 49% hitting average in the winning effort. The team was also supported by 8 kills apiece from senior Leeann Hupfer and Ertler, who also recorded 14 digs. Junior Sarah Buechel kept the Muskies going on the defensive end with 16 digs, aided by Lana Neuman's 12 digs and 41 assists.
