A new campus club has recently formed here at Lakeland College: the Hospitality Management Club. The club was formed by Dr. Stockman, Associate Professor of Hospitality, and Thomas C. Padron, instructor for Resort and Hospitality Management. They decided to form this group because of the growing interest in the hospitality major on campus, and to offer incoming students a better comparison with larger schools. This should not only strengthen the hospitality management program but also help to secure internships for its members.
Although many students think this does not relate to their major, everyone is encouraged to check it out. As Mr. Padron said, "Despite what you think, we are in your industry whether you believe it or not."
So far the club has about fifteen to twenty student members with four student officers. The president of the group is sophomore Elizabeth Ware and the vice president is senior Kayda Schiszik. Tricia Opgenorth, a junior, is the treasurer and junior Charlie Stockman is the secretary.
The Hospitality Club is talking with potential employers in the management field at the Blue Harbor Resort.
"We're trying to get into the community to get our name out," said Padron.
The group is also talking about going on trips, specifically to ski resorts to see how the different aspects of hospitality management are integrated together. They want to get involved on campus by working the concessions stand at sporting events and doing other activities that give the students a more in depth view of hospitality management than what would normally be seen in the class room.
"We are very hands on, very personal," said Padron, "It's a great opportunity for students to get involved."
Right now there is no set time when the club meets due to scheduling conflicts; however, students wishing to join should e-mail Elizabeth Ware at waree@Lakeland.edu to find out more information.
