Lakeland stumbles in Texas Southwestern Tourney

The women's volleyball team lost three out of four matches in the Southwestern Tournament on Oct. 13 and 14.
In the first match of the tournament, Lakeland's hitting percentage was poor. Lakeland stole the second game with a win, but failed to score more than 20 in their three losses. The score was 30-12, 24-30, 30-17, 30-10.
Shelly Bruni led the team in kills with eight, followed by Brittanie Paulus with 7 kills, who also led the team with 18 digs. Defensive specialist Danielle Swindell added 16 digs.
In the second match on the first day, Lakeland lost to Ohio Northern after taking the hard fought first game. The Muskies lost by a score of 34-36, 30-19, 30-14, 30-27.
The defense was led by Rachel Young and Paulus with 19 digs apiece. Kimberly Linger led the team with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .346.
Ashley Domask contributed to both sides of the court with 10 kills and 16 digs. Jessica Sparling added 44 assists to the offense and 14 digs to the defense.
The first match on the second day was Lakeland's only victory. The win came against Hardin-Simmons University with a score of 30-26, 30-20, 11-30, 30-28.
Lakeland looked good in the first two games with hitting percentages of .225 and .425 respectively. The third and fourth games were not as good with -.240 and .042 hitting percentages.
The Muskies had a trio of players with double digits in kills. Paulus led the trio with 12 kills, Domask was close behind with 11 kills, and Linger added 10 kills.
The defensive effort was also spread out with Domask leading with 13 digs. Paulus and Young both contributed 12 digs apiece. Both Whitney Helbach and Tonia Strbelinski also contributed double digit digs with 11.
The final game of the trip was a loss to Washington and Lee College 30-23, 32-34, 30-28, 30-26.
Domask led the offensive charge with 13 kills and added 11 kills on defense. Paulus accounted for 11 kills and 14 digs.
The defense was supported by Strebelinski and Helbach, who contributed 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
