Thursday, Nov. 16 the Zeta Chi Fraternity with the help of the Blood Center held its biannual blood drive in the cafeteria.
"There were about 40 people who turned out for the blood drive and 27 units of blood were donate," Chris Wray, fraternity president said. He continued, "This is a little bit less than last years numbers, but it is average for us."
Students and staff showed up to donate for various reasons. Caroline Korhonen, the Daily Grand manager said, "I donate blood because the demand is higher than the supply and because it's so important to keep our blood banks full."
"I donate blood because my grandmother passed away from leukemia," said senior and Zeta member, Christopher Tourtellott, which shows the impact of blood donation on individuals' lives.
There are a few requirements to donate blood. A person should be at least 17 years old and weigh no less than 110 pounds. The Blood Center staff will take a pulse and check iron levels and blood pressure.
It is also extremely important to be in good health when giving blood. If one has been sick with a cold, flu, fever, or sore throat recently, he must wait to donate until symptoms are gone.
Certain things may restrict a person's ability to donate, such as being in jail for more than 72 hours, getting a tattoo within the last year, or being in an area with an extremely contagious disease such as Malaria. To find out more about requirements and restrictions for blood or plasma donation go to www.bloodbook.com.
For those who did not get the chance to donate blood this semester, there will be another drive sometime before spring break. "We do that so that when people go over seas and to other countries for break, they often can't donate for a period of time, so we do it before everyone leaves," Wray said.
Wray wants to state a thank you to Dale Carlson and food service for continuously donating the refreshments for the even every semester.
