Dear Cary and Sherry,
I am really glad this semester is almost finished and I can't wait to get away from school, but I'm not so sure I want to spend 3 weeks at home. Even when I went home for Thanksgiving I had problems getting along with my family. How can I survive the holiday break?
----Home for the Holidays
Dear Home for the Holidays:
You're not looking forward to the hustle and bustle of the holidays or the rules that your parents try to enforce again? It's difficult to be independent and make your own rules for several months and then have to go back to your parents' home and their rules. Staying out until 3 a.m. may not be an option for them, even though you are used to it. It can be a challenge to balance family time during the holidays, but it can be done without getting totally frustrated. Try to manage your time so you spend some with family, but also have time alone or away from home so you can relax. Try to keep a positive attitude and realize that things will not be perfect, but do not predict disaster either. Keep things in perspective. It is only 3 weeks of your life. Try talking to your parents, and let them know how you are feeling. You expect your parents to make adjustments, so do the same for them. Remember, this is not an easy transition for your family, either. They have gotten used to you being gone as well. Give it time and try to spend some fun time together playing games or watching movies and enjoy the home-cooked meals. Before you know it, you will be back at school and wishing you were on break again!
