After the impressive voter turnout in the November midterm elections, I felt that it was important to recognize the voters. Every vote counts and every vote is important, especially since we are a Democratic Republic which is supposed to be a government of the people.
The right to vote is one that should be exercised and valued, and in the November election thousands of college students showed us that. All over the state record high estimates predicted an unusually high number of college students voting.
Also, according to the Center for the Study of the American Electorate at American University, the overall turnout was at about 40 percent, higher than the previous midterm elections.
This is a wonderful change because selecting policy makers can now affect us years down the road. Changes in Social Security, Medicare, and minimum wage, are all things we need to keep an eye on, even if retirement is far in our future.
Selecting policy makers who agree with your ideals on many levels creates a more effective government overall.
With the local elections, a single vote seems to have a more direct effect than in presidential elections, and the candidates running relate more closely to you. This is why the midterm elections were important and why it was so significant that so many turned out for the vote.
I would like to thank every one who voted and encourage every one to vote again, or for the first time, in other elections.
The government really does affect us, both negatively and, on some occasions, positively.
