The Lakeland Wrestling team took third place in the MSOE individual tournament on Dec. 2 with 68 overall points. The Muskies had three wrestlers win the championship at their respected weight classes, David Copp, Paul Hartt and Mark Vanden Hoogan.
Copp, sophomore, captured the tournament championship at the 125 weight class with three victories. Entering the tournament at the third seed, Copp opened his day with a 22-7 technical fall victory against UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Kleuskens.
Copp earned wins against James Williamson from Lawrence University 10-4 and UW-Platteville's Spencer Peterson 8-3. These two straight decisions in the semi-finals and finals earned him the championship title.
Hartt, junior and captain, entered the tournament with the number one seed and did not fail to defend. The 184 pound weight class was wrapped up by victories over Joe Austin of Lawrence University 7-3 and UW-Oshkosh's Pat Detmer 7-4 for Hartt.
"David and Paul are both now 9-1 and had a great day," said head coach Pete Rogers. "Neither one had a close match all day. Both have the potential to get to the top."
Vanden Hoogan maintained his undefeated streak by earning three more victories on the day in the Heavyweight division.
Vanden Hoogan senior and captain pinned Justin Washington from UW-Platteville in 4:17 and Joe Rodriguez from UW-Oshkosh in 2:46.
These two pins advanced Vanden Hoogan to the championship match where he defeated UW-Platteville's Ryan Rozek 5-3, earning him a decision. Vanden Hoogan was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
"Mark just continues to wrestle great and he is now 10-0 for the season," said Rogers. "He is the first wrestler since I have been here to win the most outstanding wrestler at a tournament," he added.
Two Muskie competitors, Jonas Flok and Adam Sutter, took third place in the tournament. Flok had four pins at 157, and Sutter, who also competed at Heavyweight along with Vanden Hoogan, had three.
Lakeland Wrestling will return to action against UW-Oshkosh and MSOE on Dec. 9 at the Wehr Center.
