On Dec. 2, the Lakeland men's basketball team lost to pre-season favorite Aurora in a close but high scoring affair 101-94.
The Muskies only lead came on the first bucket by sophomore Matt Rogers. Aurora took the lead and held off the fast paced Muskie offense.
"They are just a very good team," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "They have the best two players in the conference, Larry Welton and Darrick Leonard, and they definitely put it on us. We had a hard time guarding them one-on-one and they had a hard time guarding Matt (Rogers)."
Statistically, Lakeland was pretty even with Aurora. Lakeland shot 44 percent to Aurora's 42 percent. They both hit one-third of their three point shots. They were even close in rebounding, Lakeland leading that stat 43-41.
The only sore in Lakeland's play was the turnovers, where the Muskies had 18 to Aurora's 9.
Rogers led the offensive charge with 31 points and snagged seven boards. He shot 7 of 13 and hit 17 of his 19 free throws. Three other people posted double digits in scoring.
Junior Kris Saiberlich had troubles from behind the arc hitting four of thirteen, but he added 18. Junior Danny Ehnert had a team-high ten rebounds and added 11 points.
Pre-season All-American Larry Welton led Aurora with 32 points, while Darrick Leonard scored 23 points.
"We did better rebounding, but they had 14 offensive rebounds that led to a lot of baskets," said Brumett. "They also had 18 more shots than us. There is no way you are going to win a basketball game when the other team has that many more chances."
