The women's basketball team has put together an impressive 4-2 record, 2-0 in the new Northern Athletic Conference. Lakeland only came away with a 2-2 record in non-conference play, which might haunt them later if they are in contention for an NCAA bid.

The team this year isn't that much different in overall concept: good defense wins. The only difference may appear later in the season with the continuing improvement of the three starting freshman: Brittanie Paulus, KC Blahnik and Megan Chart. These ladies are starting to find their place in this Muskie offense that is centered around the inside game.

Jenna Boehm and Danielle Duranceau are the heart of this Lakeland team. They dominate the inside and create problems for opponents.

Boehm has led the team in scoring every game, including the loss to Carroll where she was in foul trouble and fouled out. She is a big body that most teams have a hard time handling in the paint. Boehm leads the team with 17.5 points per game.

Duranceau leads the team in rebounds with 46 and can also control the paint. With an outside shooting game, she is dangerous from virtually anywhere on the court. Duranceau is second on the team with eight points per game.

Paulus is a non-stop motor who plays with a lot of heart. She is having a solid year averaging five points per game and recording 28 rebounds, 20 steals, 13 assists and seven blocks.

Blahnik is showing some real promise averaging 5.5 points per game and snagging 36 rebounds on the season. The third of the starting trio, Chart, is averaging 5.8 points per game and has 13 assists.

The team has improved since the first two games of the season. During the Aurora victory, the ladies were more in sync with each other and understood what their strengths were.

With this young team growing so fast, Lakeland might be tougher than first anticipated. They will need the leadership of veteran guards Brenda Paulson and Amanda Thielmann to get them through the rough spots.

Over the break, Lakeland will play three conference games including a shot at home against Concordia-WI on Jan. 3. Concordia-WI was picked to win the NAC in the pre-season coaches poll.
