Lakeland's Golden Key chapter of Mortar Board is holding a week in celebration for its founding anniversary. The organization has been in existence for 89 years on Feb 18, 1918.
Due to scheduling issues, Lakeland's Mortar Board week will be held the following week of Feb. 19 through the 25th. "On Thursday, we have a Jeopardy night up in Bossard, and on Friday we may be co-sponsoring something with the Pi Kappa Gamma sorority," said Dino Mujakovic, President of Lakeland's Mortar Board chapter.
The Golden Key chapter will also be co-sponsoring a 30-hour famine/food drive with the Phi Delta Omega sorority. Food will be collected Feb. 23 through 25.
Last but not least, Mortar Board will have posters up around campus with fun facts, letting students know what the organization is about is about.
The purpose of the week, besides Mortar Board's establishment date, is to inform students about the organization. "That way, next month when the election process for next year's members begins, more people will be interested in applying," said Mujakovic.
For the selection process, students will be receiving letters from the Golden Key chapter in the mail. Juniors who have at least a 3.0 GPA and have shown leadership in the community are asked to join for their senior year. There is also a $60 membership fee, if accepted.
The organization first came to life on February 18 of 1918. Originally an all women group, Mortar Board opened up for men in 1975. The first colleges and universities associated with the group were Swarthmore College, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and Cornell University.
Lakeland's Golden Key chapter was established in February 1997, and the three point motto of the original Mortar Board still stands today: Leadership, service, and scholarship.
Lakeland's chapter is selective, with a maximum of fifty students. Members are required to do fifty hours of service; therefore many of their activities are opportunities to fulfill that community service.
"We have done book drives and food drives, and are currently deciding where to deliver the books from a previous drive," said Mujakovic.
The group has the same job positions as many college organizations: President, vice president, treasurer, historian, accountant, membership chair, as well as an executive board.
Currently, Mortar Board has 240,000 members, 214 college chapters, and 43 alumni chapters nationwide.
Former celebrity figures involved with Mortar Board include Lance Armstrong, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O' Connor, former President Jimmy Carter, and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.
