With the shooting problems the women's basketball team has been experiencing lately, Sunday's result against Rockford was more than welcome.
Lakeland turned the tables on the Regents, holding them to just 31.1 percent shooting in the game as the Muskies cruised to a 50-34 win.
The Muskies (14-9, 11-6 NAC) themselves went only 17-for-50 but managed to connect on 8-of-19 from behind the three point line.
Danielle Duranceau made four of Lakeland's threes and finished with 19 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench. Kasey Gussert, who was inserted into the starting lineup for Saturday's game and responded with a career best 15 points at Alverno, scored 11 points and dished out four assists.
Jenna Boehm, the Muskies' season scoring leader, was limited to 11 minutes due to foul trouble but did manage to grab a game-high nine rebounds.
Lakeland's defense stifled Rockford (8-15, 6-11 NAC) for much of the game. The Muskies held the Regents without a point during an 11 minute stretch during the first half, jumping out to a 24-10 lead, but Rockford scored the final three minutes of the half.
"Our defense definitely helped us out today," said head coach April Arvan. "Our coaching staff did a good job of putting a game plan together and our players did a pretty good job of executing it defensively and taking care of the basketball."
The Muskies then shot 42.9 percent during the second half to hang on for the win.
Lakeland is now locked in a three-way tie for fifth place in the NAC with Marian and Wisconsin Lutheran, the two teams left on the schedule. Only six teams advance to the conference tournament, so wins are at a premium right now.
"Everything is in our hands," Arvan said. "We just have to take care of business and do the very best job we can to be successful in the next couple of games."
The Muskies' final regular season game against the visiting Marian Sabres is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. Should Lakeland make the conference tournament, they would play on Monday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
Results for Wednesday's game at Wisconsin Lutheran were not available at time of publication.
